“All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful, but not all things build up. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.” 1 Corinthians 10: 23-24
Paul lays down a Biblical principle of how to live out being a Christian in this world. Sin is sin, and the Word of God is clear about it. Time does not change this, society may say it is okay, acceptable and old fashioned, but Scripture must be our guide if we are going to please the Lord.
But Paul is giving us a higher principle in how we live as a Christian, when we need to make decisions.
• “All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful.” There are things that may not be sinful, and if we are looking for an answer if we should do it or not. Things may be lawful, but are they helpful for my spiritual life? Are these things helping or hurting my marriage, family, testimony. There are something’s that may be okay for some but they are not helpful for me. If I want to grow in my spiritual life then I need to see is what I am doing helping me spiritually? Is it helping me to minister to others?
• All things are lawful, but not all things build up. Is this going to lead others to Jesus. Here is a Biblical principle in dealing with other people. Our families, friends, other Christians are watching us, and we need to be an example to them. We need to make sure how we live our Christian life to make sure we are building people up and not hurting them spiritually!
Today, help me to be concerned about doing things that will be helpful in my spiritual life and to build up others!
