"O death, where is your victory?  O death, where is your sting?  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  BUT thanks be to God, who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain."  1 Corinthians 15: 55-58

In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul writes to the church about death and the resurrection of Christ, but also for the believer.  There is nothing more final in this world, than standing at a cemetery and watching them lower your loved one, being lowered into the ground.  That is the sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  Without Christ what hope does anyone have during this time?

But Paul writes to the church and tells us that Christ makes all the difference at the time of death.  In verse 57 - "But thanks be to God, who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."  Death is real, death is painful, death is a time of great sorrow and transition in our lives, but death is not final!  As a Christian we have the hope of the resurrection, the hope of heaven, the hope of being reunited one day when we get to go heaven.  Jesus gives us victory over death!  Without Christ what hope do we have for today, tomorrow or for all of eternity?

What is the result of this hope?  Verse 58 - "Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain."  Because of the resurrection, we need to be steadfast (not giving up on Jesus, not being all over the place, but we continue to hold steady in our spiritual walk, because Jesus is alive and we will be alive for eternity.)  Be immovable - do not allow the things of this world to move you, shake you, get you off track from your relationship with Jesus Christ.  Always abounding in the work of the Lord - keep loving Jesus, keep serving Jesus, keep growing in your spiritual walk with the Lord, and never stop pointing people to Jesus Christ.  Because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life and no man comes to the Father but through Him!

Death is real, death is painful, death is life changing, but as a believer we must know - "But thanks be to God, who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."  I am thankful for the hope of the resurrection!
