"Answer me quickly, O Lord! My spirit fails! Hide not Your face from me, lest I be like those who go down to the pit. Let me hear in the morning of Your steadfast love, for in YOU I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul." Psalm 143: 7-8
In the first six verses of Psalm 143 - we see David's condition and that he is discouraged, dismayed, defeated and even depressed. He is down and in a very dark place (not only being in a cave, but emotionally). We have all been in seasons like this in our own lives.
But what does David do in this desperate time? Listen to how David cries out to the Lord in prayer:
* "Answer me quickly, O Lord! My spirit fails." We see the prayer of desperation. David is saying - "Lord, I do not know how much more I can take, I need You to answer me." How many of us have felt this way over the last three months? Lord, I cannot take one more thing. I know that I have been there and we need God's answer! But look carefully as what David does not say: He does not tell the Lord what to do! He simply says, My spirit fails, and I need You to answer Me! I need Your help, Your assistance, because my spirit is failing.
Today, we need to pray prayers of desperation to the Lord that we are failing and we need an answer from the Lord!
* "Hide not Your face from me!" David needs to not just know in his head that God is there, but I need to experience Your presence here in this dark place! How many of us have felt: "Where is God over these last three months?" "God where are You?" David asks for HIs presence and not just His provision. How many of us just want God to give us and not His presence in the dark times. Let's seek His face and not just His hands in these difficult times.
* "Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in You I trust." We need to experience His steadfast love for us, and when you know that you are loved - it is easier to trust! In our dark times of life - we need His Love and when we know that God really does love us and only wants what is best for us - the result is that we can really learn to trust in the Lord.
* "Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul." David says Lord, in this dark place, I do not know which way to go. How many of us have felt confused, and not knowing what direction that we should go, in this dark time. Like David, we need to pray that the Lord will lead us and that we will be willing to follow Him. We need to be close enough to the Lord, so that we can hear His voice and follow Him.
If you want to know how to pray when you are going through a dark time, then David gives us some good steps to help us in those times when we feel down, discouraged and defeated by all that is going on in our lives!
Lord, help me to remember that "You are the God of all of my days." "He that began a good work in me, will bring it to the day of completion." So help, me to trust You today!
