"Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." Psalm 139: 23-24
David shows us how to pray and to stay right with God and right with people. This is a prayer that we need today! We live in a day when it is so easy to judge, criticize, put down, become opinionated on what we think should be done by others. David understands that life is a marathon and not a 50 yard dash, when it comes to our walk with the Lord.
Here is a prayer that we need in our lives if we want to cross the finish line in our spiritual race and life.
First, we need to ask the "Lord, search me, O God, and know my heart." We need to ask the Holy Spirit to search me! It is easy to pray for God to do a work on someone else, but the reality is we need the Lord to search our hearts, because we can be deceived by our feelings, flesh, emotions, our upbringing, religious ideology, and culture. But we need the Holy Spirit to search our hearts. Our prayer should be search my heart and then clean my heart and renew a right spirit in me. We should always start praying about my spiritual condition!
Second, "Try me and know my thoughts." This is the picture of a trial, when you stand before the judge, and the evidence comes out at trial. David is asking the Lord to try him, and to know his thoughts. What would happen if people could see our thoughts? We may hide our thoughts from people, but eventually our thoughts will come out. We need to ask the Lord to renew our minds. God's Word says - "Be transformed by the renewing of our mind." What thoughts do we need to confess to the Lord and ask Him to transform me. Lord, help my thoughts to be in line with Your Word.
Thirdly, "If there be any grievous ways in me..." If there is any sinful, wicked, fleshly, worldly way in me then we need to confess it to the Lord and we need to change by the power of Jesus Christ! This is where the rubber meets the road. This is where we change not only on the inside, but our actions, behavior, attitudes, and lifestyles change. This is where repentance takes place in our daily lives.
Lastly, "...and lead me in the way everlasting." Then after the conviction, the cleansing and the change, then we can walk the walk that God wants us to live out daily. If we want to finish the race spiritually, then we need to follow Jesus every day.
Today, Lord this is my prayer! Convict me, Cleanse me, Change me and Complete me so I can finish the race with You!
