"For there were about five thousand men. And Jesus said to his disciples, "Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each." And they did so, and had them all sit down. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. And they all ate and were satisfied. And what was left over was picked up, twelve baskets of broken pieces." Luke 9:14-17

This is the miracle of Jesus feeding the 5000, but this number was not including women and children. Imagine the size of this crowd, and they are all hungry. They need a miracle because there is no McDonald's, Pizza place, or a grocery store to go and get something to eat. The disciples come to Jesus and say it is getting late, "You need to send the crowds away to find lodging and a place to eat."

And Jesus, uses this need of a miracle to develop the faith of the disciples. Jesus tells them - "You give them something to eat." The disciples tried to figure out how this would work? We do not have a store, we do not have money, and all that we could come up with is 5 loaves and a couple of fish. But that is not going to feed this crowd. The disciples do what we do and we look at why it cannot happen. We look at the lack, the need, the problem, the obstacle before us, instead of looking to Jesus who was with them and with us.

Jesus tells them to have the people sit down in groups of 50. Then Jesus teaches the disciples then and now what to do when we are in need of a miracle.

First, Jesus LOOKED UP TO HEAVEN! When we are facing impossible situations the first thing that we should do is look up to heaven. Prayer is looking to the Almighty God that is able to still work miracles in our lives and in our situations. How many times we look around, we look down, we look within, but Jesus teaches us to LOOK UP TO HEAVEN!

Secondly, Jesus PRAYED A BLESSING OVER WHAT HE DID HAVE. He prayed a blessing over the loaves and the fishes.

We need to ask the Lord to bless what we already have been given by the Lord. God will use what we have and will bless that in our lives. I am reminded of the lady that only had a little oil, and the prophet told her to go into your room and pray and then begin pouring the oil into every vessel that you collect. God will bless what He has already given to you.

Thirdly, Jesus BROKE IT and GAVE IT AWAY! God gives us miracles to break it and give it away! When we realize that God blesses us to be a blessing to someone else. God blesses us to reach people, minister to people and to be generous. We need to understand that miracles happen when we allow the Lord to break us and give us away.

Lastly, the people were SATISFIED! If we are going to make a difference in our families, friends and in our city, we first must be satisfied in Jesus! Jesus is the only One that can satisfy us in this world that we live today! Think about it: The greatest miracle is that we are satisfied in life because Jesus is all that we need!

Today, help us to realize that we have a part in the miracles that God wants to do today!
