“And Jesus told this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it BUT FOUND NONE.” And he said to the vinedresser, “Look for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?” And he answered him, “Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and put on manure. Then if it should bear fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.” Luke 13: 6-9 This is the Parable of the Barren Fig tree. Fruit trees are expected to bear fruit. What good is a fruit tree if there is no fruit. For three years this tree had no fruit. What good is a Christian if there is no fruit? God’s Word tells us: “They will know we are Christians by our fruit.” We need to have the fruit, the outflow of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. The owner of the fig trees comes to the worker and says. I have watched this tree for three years, and there has been no fruit. Cut the tree down, because it is taking up space, that can be used for productive trees. But the worker says, “Give me one more year and I will work the soil, put manure around it, tend to the tree to see if it can produce fruit again. If it does not produce any fruit, we can cut it down next year. This is a parable that we should look at our own lives. Are we just a fruitless tree or are we a fruit producing tree? Are we useful to God’s kingdom or are we just a tree that is taking up space, but has no fruit? What is the purpose of a fruit tree? To produce fruit to feed others. Why is Jesus looking for producing Christians? Because the world is hungry and we are the only Jesus they are going to see and taste. Lord, help me to keep producing your fruit in my life! Lord, help me to feed others with what you are producing in my life!
