"A woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to Jesus and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her." Luke 10: 38-42

When you read this account of two sisters, Martha and Mary. We want to think that one is good and one is bad. But that is not what Jesus is saying here. Jesus is talking about PRIORITIES! Everyone of us lives with priorities, choices and decisions that we need to make every day for our lives.

Think about it: Where is Jesus? Jesus is in Martha and Mary's home. Jesus has been invited in, but what was the priority of Martha and what was the priority of Mary? Mary made the choice to sit with Jesus, fellowship with Jesus, listen to Jesus, and allow Jesus to minister to her. Mary is not being lazy, not being a servant, but made the choice because Jesus was in her home, and that she wanted to BE with Jesus. That is a priority that we must daily make for our own personal lives. BEING MUST COME BEFORE DOING!

Martha on the other hand, made the choice to SERVE OR DO FOR JESUS! There is nothing wrong with this motive, because serving Jesus is important. But Martha is upset, agitated because her sister is not helping her get the food ready for Jesus. Jesus says - "Martha, you are DISTRACTED WITH SERVING." Martha, you are so concerned about DOING, but I am here in your house, YOU ARE MISSING BEING WITH ME!"

There are times we need to be like Mary and allow the Lord to minister to us, bless us, feed us, refill us and just be in His presence. Because when we have to serve Him, it comes out of our being with Jesus.

Lord, help me to first BE WITH YOU, THEN I CAN SERVE YOU, BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN IN YOUR PRESENCE! Today, help us to make You the priority in our lives in every situation!
